Technically when the patient’s physician states “There is nothing more that can be done medically to cure the Garden Pathdisease and that if the disease takes its usual course the patient will find end of life in 6months or less.”

Most physicians will not begin this conversation with you unless you bring it to their attention. The physician is trained to heal, and feel they have failed if they refer to hospice care for their patient. Generally the physician will refer to another physician who specializes in “palliative care”.

When a palliative care specialist is called in on the case the primary physician is saying that the patient has gone past the “curable” phase and is in the latter stages of “disease management”. The “disease management” phase may last up to several years. Then the patient moves into the “terminal” phase of the disease and usually in a short time to death.
